Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's annual trip to Yasukuni Shrine in Chiyoda ward, Tokyo occurred on October 17 th. Yasukuni is infamous for enshrining the souls of 14 class A war criminals convicted at the end of hostilities in the Second World War, in addition to Japan 's 2.5 million war dead.
