Tailing the Whalers
by Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert

These photographs were taken as part of a 2 month long Greenpeace International expedition aboard the MV Arctic Sunrise to the Southern Ocean, in December 2001/January 2002, to monitor, document and protest against the killing of more than 400 Antarctic Minke whales , under the guise of 'scientific research', by the Japanese whaling fleet. The whaling fleet comprises of a research vessel, 3 catcher ships and one factory ship.

Commercial whaling is banned under the International Whaling Commission Moratorium of 1985. The whaling bodies of Japan claim they hunt whales for 'scientific' reasons, yet the body for which this "research" is being done, the International Whaling Commission (IWC), does not need the data, and has called for the programme to be ended.
